40 Days for Life is a national, ecumenical pro-life effort that consists of 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion and peaceful vigil outside abortion facilities. The campaign is run twice a year-once during Lent, and once in the fall-in hundreds of cities across the country. The upcoming spring campaign will run from February 22 to April 1, 2012 in five Massachusetts communities: Attleboro, Haverhill, Lynn, Springfield and Worcester. Participation in the campaign can take many forms: praying at one of the public vigils, remembering the campaign in your daily prayers, fasting in support of the campaign, etc. But, of course, the most visible is the public vigil.

Austin Ruse, President of Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute has been following the situation closely. He tells Life News that today's statement by Komen does not change the policy they announced earlier this week.
Carol Tobias, President of National Right to Life Committee, calls on Komen not to fund Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers in the future. Her press release seems to recognize the realities presented by Ruse and lays out a fruitful strategy for us to use.
Thanks to all the people who are digging clarity out of the press coverage and have sent along the information! Anne

NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE RESPONDS TO
KOMEN DECISION REGARDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD
WASHINGTON - Succumbing to pressure from the mainstream media and Planned Parenthood, Susan G. Komen for the Cure today announced Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its affiliates will remain eligible for grant funding. Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest abortion provider, performing approximately 27% of all abortions annually in the United States.
The following statement may be attributed to National Right to Life President Carol Tobias:
Shortly after news broke earlier this week that Komen was withdrawing future grant funding to Planned Parenthood and its affiliates, the abortion giant and its allies began a shrill online campaign to bring Komen to its knees by bullying the organization into submission.
Any decision to provide future grants approved for Planned Parenthood, which boasts a $1.1 billion budget, would be extremely and sadly misguided. Any grants to Planned Parenthood would be detrimental to women and their unborn children. Even in their own press statements, Planned Parenthood states that they refer for mammograms, an indication they don't perform them.
Planned Parenthood is not in the business of fighting breast cancer, they're in the business of performing abortions to the tune of more than 300,000 a year, which accounts for at least one-third of Planned Parenthood's nongovernmental clinic income. In fact, Planned Parenthood has announced that all of their affiliates will be required to perform abortions.
National Right to Life strongly urges Susan G. Komen for the Cure and all cancer research organizations to approve no future funding to Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest chain of abortion clinics. Right-to-life supporters do not want their donations for fighting cancer to go to organizations that perform abortions.
Founded in 1968, the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of 50 state right-to-life affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, is the nation's oldest and largest grassroots pro-life organization. Recognized as the flagship of the pro-life movement, NRLC works through legislation and education to protect innocent human life from abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide and euthanasia.
In the wake of the Komen-Planned Parenthood controversy, Lance Armstrong, cancer survivor, champion cyclist and Livestrong founder and chairman announced that his cancer group will donate $100,000 to the nation's biggest abortion business.
He issued the following statement:
"For 15 years, the Lance Armstrong Foundation has served people and families affected by cancer, especially those in underserved communities. We join Mayor Bloomberg and our partners in the philanthropic community today in their efforts to preserve access to cancer screening for women throughout the U.S. The Lance Armstrong Foundation will add an additional $100,000 to Mayor Bloomberg's matching challenge for Planned Parenthood's cancer services fund."
Thanks to Helen Cross, here is the video of the wonderful presentation that Wayne Cockfield gave at the Assembly. It is a winner - as is Wayne.
We were so fortunate to have Representative Angelo Scacia act as emcee, beautiful, professional music by Helen Cross and Pat and Eric Anthony. The Treblemakers from the Montrose School performed and everyone was delighted. Bakhita Thordarson, a senior at Montrose , shared her experiences at the March for Life. Jean Armano accepted the Outstanding Chapter Award for the Greater Lawrence Chapter and Kathy Celuci accepted the Flatley Trophy for Heartbeat of Burlington, which again brought the most walkers to the Walk to Aid Mothers and Children.
During the week Wayne was here,, we got an email from Rhode Island Right to Life describing how "Occupiers" had stormed their Assembly at the RI state House, abused the right to lifers and kept the speakers from speaking. Wayne said that had happened on a smaller scale at home in South Carolina. When our beautiful Assembly finished, we breathed a sigh of relief.
How many times has someone asked you about Susan B Komen funding Planned Parenthood. Now the answer is different -they have stopped funding. Most gratifying development
There is a skunk in the yard. Pro-abs have mounted an assault on Komen to try to get them to change back. Planned Parenthood is whining that they will have find other funding or woman will suffer, a U S Congresswoman from California has announced withdrawal of support, etc. All the national pro-life leaders are urging us to counter this barrage. Please write to news@komen.org to say thank for defunding Planned Parenthood.
Writing to thank Susan B Komen - another thing you thought you never would do, but please do. Anne
After years of protests and criticism from pro-life advocates, the biggest breast cancer organization, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has announced it is halting further grants and donations to the Planned Parenthood.
Figures from August directly from the Komen for the Cure foundation show 18 affiliates of the breast cancer charity gave a total of more than $569,000 to the Planned Parenthood abortion business in 2010. That was down from the $731,303 Komen officials publicly confirmed in October 2010, when they acknowledged that 20 of the 122 Komen affiliates gave to Planned Parenthood during the 2009 fiscal year.
The MCFL Caucus was amazing! At one point I had to ask some people to move out to the foyer because I was concerned about fire laws.
It is wonderful to see the number of young people, but I also saw many who have come every year since the 70's.
I will be sharing with you information from all our wonderful speakers. Prof New closed the caucus with his usual great analysis of state laws. She told us that planned parenthood has announced that 2011 was their worst year ever! Twenty-Four states passed 92 pro-life laws. Prof New's figures along with those reported by Texas at the NRLC Board meeting, indicate that states have defunded PP by more than $120 million.
A local radio station is broadcasting live.
Congressmen are lined up to speak. The drizzle is very heavy as we set off.
CareNet of Fitchburg has invited us to hear Catherine Adair share her story - from prochoice feminist and abortion clinic worker to a committed Catholic working to end abortion. She will share the truth about what goes on behind the doors of the abortion clinic and what you can do to stop it. This looks amazing! I certainly hope to make it! Anne

I know you have heard about the 40 DAYS FOR LIFE efforts. You probably heard David Bereit speak about 40 DAYS at the MCFL Walk a couple of years ago. If you have read Abby Johnson's Unplanned, you know the power of this prayer effort.
People across Massachusetts are about to start a 40 day vigil. You will see the locations are such that one of them will be convenient for you to participate. I hope you will be able to join. This state certainly needs the prayers. Blessings on you and all those working on this fine effort! Anne
It took the death of a young woman like Laura Hope Smith to force the state of Maryland to begin regulating abortion. It's time for Massachusetts to bring itself to the same high standard and begin enforcing the laws to protect the health of young women.
Denise Crowe, a 21-year-old mother, secretly sought an abortion at a clinic in Severna Park in 2006, but died on the way to the hospital after she overdosed on an anesthetic.
The clinic did not have a qualified anesthetist on staff, and employees were not trained in basic life support. The doctor who performed the procedure had a history of complaints.
In the past 20 years, five Maryland doctors have been disciplined for harming patients during abortion procedures. In each case, there was an issue involving anesthesia.
Now, supporters of a proposal to ensure that abortion clinics meet the same standards as facilities that perform outpatient surgeries say they are hopeful that deaths like Crowe's can be prevented.
The National Right to Life Committee has put together one of their excellent comparison sheets on the presidential candidates. It is encouraging! http://massprolife.com/attachm... I'm sure they will update as the field changes.
Last week I was headed out to an MCFL meeting in Ludlow. The Pike was crowded so I was behind the same car until it got off in Framingham. The car had the Choose Life 982 plate. I cannot tell you how exciting it was to know I was following a friend who was making a life-saving statement.
Merry Nordeen, the founder of the Choose Life plates, has this amazing news, "Today, 2,025 registered Choose Life plates are on the road as a visible testimony to promote the cause of life. In just one year, over $100,000 has been raised to support life through grants to Massachusetts pregnancy resource centers, counselor training, nurse sonographer training, youth conferences and the MCFL Summer Academy for high school students. Please help promote the Choose Life plate so we can continue this important work. Plates can be ordered through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles website at mass.gov/rmv."
Look how many pro-life efforts are benefitting - including MCFL. It is up to each and every one of us to fill the roads of the Commonwealth! I'll be looking for you around the state! Anne
This inconsistency is irrational and illogical. Women who lose their children through miscarriage feel an enormous loss because of the loss of that child's life. Women who go through abortion, who are often coerced and pressured into making that decision, naturally feel the same sort of loss.
Instead of performing 1,400,000 abortions every year, nearly 3600 per day, the medical community could be focusing their resources on preventing miscarriages and in solving the hidden causes of miscarriage. The $300 million given each year to the nation's largest abortionist, Planned Parenthood, would go a long way to advance the medical research necessary to help end miscarriage.
Two articles both from Science Daily which demonstrate the hypocrisy of the abortion industry:
This week the U. S. House is expected to vote on the Fiscal Year 2012 Financial Services Appropriations Bill (H.R. 2434). As reported from committee, this bill prevents all congressionally appropriated funds, federal and local, from being used for elective abortions in the District of Columbia. An amendment to allow local public funds to be used for elective abortions was defeated in committee. The pro-abs will offer a similar amendment on the House floor.
Since the Obama administration has forced tax funding of abortions in DC, 300 abortions have been funded - ie - 300 babies have died who would be alive if tax money had not been available to kill them.
Call your Congressman! Message: oppose any amendment to remove or weaken the ban on DC abortionfunding.

Studies show that the availability of public funds for abortion greatly increases abortions. Any lawmaker seeking to reduce abortion should support the DC abortion funding ban. Even some of ours might get that, so please make your call!
The AUL Report:
• Demonstrates that as Planned Parenthood has become more heavily subsidized by the government, Planned Parenthood has simultaneously become more abortion-saturated.
• Reveals how Planned Parenthood has failed to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars; affiliates in multiple states have been exposed for overbilling government health care programs.
• Exposes how Planned Parenthood is far outside the mainstream, opposing and ignoring common-sense laws designed to protect women and girls. For example, in 2009, the Alabama Department of Public Health issued a report stating that Planned Parenthood staff at a Birmingham, Alabama abortion clinic "failed to obtain parental consent for 9 of 9 minor patients in a manner that complies with state legal requirements.
New Hampshire Must Re-Vote on De-Funding Planned Parenthood Last week, the members of the Executive Council rejected a taxpayer funded contract with the Planned Parenthood abortion business but it appears the members will have to vote again on voiding the 1.8 million contract.
In a move that generated little media attention or focus, New Hampshire became the latest state to scrap taxpayer funding of the Planned Parenthood abortion business when members of a panel voted 3-2 to revoke the funding. Members of the Executive Council said they made the decision because Planned Parenthood does abortions and spends large amounts of money paying its administrators huge salaries and lobbying the state government.
The Executive Council voided the contract with Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) with Councilor Dan St. Hilaire of Concord casting a vote against the contract along with David Wheeler of Nashua and Raymond J. Wieczorek of Manchester. The Union Leader indicated Raymond S. Burton of Bath and Chris Sununu of Newfields supported funding the abortion business.
Now, the New Hampshire Journal obtained an e-mail from Health and Human Services Commissioner Nick Toumpas, a Democrat, to council member Wheeler that it says makes it appear the council will have to re-vote on the state contracts, giving Planned Parenthood a second chance to make its case. In his letter, Toumpas admits HHS used strange budget numbers concerning the contracts and the newspaper says the wrong numbers are being used as "an excuse" to require a second vote. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/0...
ACTION: Contact members of the Executive Council at http://www.nh.gov/council/ and ask them to vote against the Planned Parenthood contract.
Title of Abby's talk: "Planned Parenthood: the Hyper-Political, Underregulated, Out-of-Control, Megamarketer of Abortion"
Abby said that in 2008 she was a Planned Parenthood Employee of the Year. Today she told us she had spent 8 years living a lie; that it's not about our plan, not about us. Somewhere out there she said there is somebody waiting to hear the truth from us; we cannot let our fire dwindle; we are on the winning team! She is inspiring.
Former Louisiana governor and Presidential candidate Buddy Roemer tells MCFL News he would completely defund Planned Parenthood if elected, and would zero out all Title X money.
Comments made today at the 2011 Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.
This afternoon, the House banned federal funds from being used to train doctors on how to perform abortions! The vote was 234-182. Yes, that is 172 plus the entire MA House delegation. This is part of the plan to dismantle Obamacare. I think you'll like the article from the Associated Press which explains more fully.
When it comes time to call our senators on this, I'll let you know. Thanks for your commitment! Anne
House bans funds for teaching abortion techniques
Published: Wednesday, 25 May 2011 | 4:04 PM ET
WASHINGTON - The House voted Wednesday to ban teaching health centers from using federal money to train doctors on how to perform abortions, the latest in a series of anti-abortion measures pushed by the Republican majority.
The author of the measure, Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., said she wanted to make it "crystal clear that taxpayer money is not being used to train health care providers to perform abortion procedures."
This Thursday, NPR's health-policy blog, Shots, posted a sympathetic article about a recent Guttmacher Institute study that analyzed the costs of unintended pregnancies. This study, which makes use of both aggregate and survey-level data, finds that births due to unintended pregnancies cost taxpayers approximately $11 billion in 2006. These costs are split between federal and state governments, largely through the S-CHIP and Medicaid programs. According to the study, the percentage of births paid for by Medicaid and S-CHIP increased from 15 percent to 48 percent between 1985 and 2006.
Not surprisingly, the folks at NPR subject this research to precious little scrutiny. In fact, they are generous with praise stating that this study "is sure to raise some eyebrows in the anti-abortion community." Furthermore, they make the bizarre statement that "both sides of the heated abortion issue generally trust and cite Guttmacher's research." One seriously wonders if NPR reporters ever speak to pro-life professionals. Guttmacher does have some scholars who conduct rigorous research on reproductive-health issues. However, many of their in-house publications are often little more than advocacy pieces calling for more public funding for contraception.
The House voted 251 - 175 to pull all tax funding for abortion. All of our Massachusetts Congressmen voted against the bill - ie - in favor of using our tax money to pay for abortions. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/0...
Pro-life Senators have already filed a Senate bill to codify funding restrictions and to remove abortion funding from Obamacare. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/0...
I'll let you know as things develop in the Senate. Thank you for all the calls you made! Anne
